New Alaafin, Oba Akeem Owoade, has adjusted the curfew in preparation for his upcoming coronation, allowing for the observance of Ramadan prayers. The Chief of Staff to the Alaafin-designate, Rotimi Osuntola, initially announced a curfew from 8pm to 6am but later revised it to begin at 10pm and end at 4.30am. This change was made to accommodate the early morning Fajr prayer and evening Taraweeh prayer during the holy month of Ramadan.
Owoade arrived in Oyo town to kick off his coronation rites, starting with performing enthronement rituals at the Baba Iyaji residence. From there, he will proceed to Ona Isokun, Ilemole, Bara, and finally to the Koso chamber, accompanied by his chiefs and priests. Movements are restricted during the curfew hours, and anyone found contravening this order will face arrest and detention until 7am the following day.
The Oro Ipebi, mandatory rites leading up to Owoade’s ascension to the throne, are set to take place from March 7th to March 29th, 2025. The seclusion period, known as Ipebi, is a crucial part of the traditional rites where the incoming Alaafin goes into seclusion, guided by the Oluawo (Ifa priest) and supported by the Oyo Mesi, priests, and priestesses. This period culminates in the installation of the new king after the completion of all traditional rituals.
Spiritual Significance of Rites and Rituals
The Ipebi ritual signifies a deep spiritual connection between the Alaafin and divine forces. The Oluawo, serving as the spiritual guide, plays a vital role in advising and supporting the Alaafin throughout the seclusion period. Additionally, the Oyo Mesi, priests, and priestesses offer prayers, perform sacrifices, and provide spiritual assistance, ensuring the spiritual well-being and authority of the Alaafin. Symbolism and Tradition in Coronation
During the coronation ceremony in the Koso chamber, the Alaafin-elect will be crowned with a royal headdress symbolizing his renewed spiritual authority. He will engage in various rituals, make offerings to the Orisas and his ancestors, strengthening his connection with the divine forces that govern his reign. This elaborate ceremony marks the official installation of the new Alaafin, solidifying his position as the ruler of the Oyo kingdom.
